Waterproofing Cable Conduit Wall Penetrations

In March we were requested to provide a series of concrete repair and waterproofing solutions at a shopping centre located on Woodbine Ave. in Markham. The first project completed was wall expansion joint repair in their parking garage, after which we waterproofed a wall with cable penetrations.

Why Waterproof around Cable Conduits

Waterproofing walls with cable conduit penetrations is of paramount importance in maintaining the structural integrity and longevity of buildings, particularly in structures like condominiums, where water ingress can lead to significant damage. Cable conduits, while necessary for electrical and communication systems, create vulnerable points in the building envelope through which water can infiltrate, potentially causing moisture-related issues such as mold growth, deterioration of building materials, and compromising the overall indoor air quality. Effective waterproofing not only prevents immediate problems like leaks into underground parking garages but also safeguards against long-term structural damage and costly repairs. By sealing these penetrations with appropriate waterproofing materials like polyurea-based membranes, buildings can better withstand environmental elements, ensuring a dry and water-resistant surface.

Site Characteristics

On this occasion, we were tasked with waterproofing another wall penetrated by a cable conduit to address leakage issues into the underground parking garage.

Repair Method

As always, meticulous preparation is essential for a successful waterproofing installation, as it ensures adequate adhesion. We began by thoroughly cleaning the surface using a mechanical wire brush. Next, the section of the wall housing the conduit underwent parging and was coated with a cold-applied polyurea-based waterproofing material.

Benefits of Polyurea

Polyurea, a synthetic polymer derived from the reaction between an isocyanate component and an amine blend, boasts a moisture-insensitive molecular structure, making it an ideal waterproofing membrane. Its versatility is unmatched, allowing for application on vertical and curved surfaces, including complex architectural structures. Among its numerous advantages are thermal stability, rapid application, and adjustability in texture and thickness. Notably, polyurea is an eco-friendly option, with its solvent-free, 100% solids formula being fully recyclable.
